Artificial Turf Installation Process in Austin, TX

Learn about The Woodlands Grass’ artificial turf installation process in Austin, TX. We have compiled all of the necessary information about our step-by-step process and synthetic turf materials and equipment. Check them out now.

The Process

1. Ground Clearing

The first step in the installation process is to remove any existing lawn or debris from the ground. Existing turf is eliminated with a spade or turf cutter. The long-term quality of our installation depends on a clean base, which may include removing sod, rocks, gravel, and other items from existing lawns.

2. Base Height
The second step is to make sure that the turf is put at the appropriate finish grade for drainage. This needs a base roughly 2″ to 4″ below the finish grade. Depending on the conditions, any excess soil is removed and discarded, or fill material is brought in.
Base Height Installation
3. Gravel Sub-Base
Next, to provide a stabilized sub-base, 3/8th” down to 1/8th” crushed drain rock or decomposed granite is installed. Depending on the application, the crushed gravel is hauled in and spread to form a 3″ thick base. This sub-base provides a sturdy foundation for the turf while also allowing for drainage.

4. Grading
The small, crushed rock particles are graded to meet drainage requirements. This procedure allows us to evaluate the grass’ exact finish level and avoid any areas of water build-up or improper drainage.

5. Compacting the Base
A plate compactor or roller is brought in to compact the base. Water is sprayed over the gravel before tamping to ensure proper compaction and reduce dust. The purpose of this phase is to achieve 90% to 95% compaction. The compacted crushed gravel sub-base is given time to dry and checked for irregularities before proceeding.

6. Weed Barrier
To prevent weeds from creeping up through the turf and causing it to buckle or disfigure, we lay a sheet of weed-suppressing membrane over your lawn and trim it to shape with a utility knife. We can install a layer of shock-absorbent material if desired. This step is optional, but it may be worth considering if you want the grass to provide more cushioning for kids. Pads with thicknesses ranging from 1/4″ to 3″ are offered.

7. Laying the Turf
15’ wide turf rolls are carried in and spread out. Our professional installation team lays out the grass in the most appropriate way for your lawn, following the same direction as natural grass blades. This arrangement is thoroughly considered before cutting begins.

8. Cutting the Grass
In this step, the turf is trimmed to fit your yard. Whether it’s a perfect square, rectangle, or a winding path bordered by boulders, the turf can be shaped to fit your existing landscape.
9. Securing and Seaming
We secure the turf by staking the edges with 6” galvanized landscape spikes or 6” sod staples. Staples are placed at 6″ intervals around the edges and more frequently at the seams, which become nearly unnoticeable once installed.

10. Infill
“Infill” is acrylic-coated sand with antimicrobial properties and ZeoFill (in pet applications). The products are spread between the artificial grass blades to allow them to stand up and add cushion to the turf, improve durability in traffic zones, and emulate the look and feel of natural grass.

Artificial Golfing Green Installation

Are you an avid golfer who longs for a private green field at home? Consider putting one in your backyard made of synthetic turf. The procedure is comparable to that of installing a whole patio. The only change is that instead of a block of weeds, we use a layer of foam filling that comes in three thicknesses: quarter, half, and three-quarters of an inch. The foam creates a durable and inflatable texture that can assist with your game. Contact us for additional information.
